At Hunter, we begin with the end in mind.

It is our highest calling to partner with parents in the formation of the next generation.  In our students, we cultivate wisdom and virtue - the fruits of nourishing a soul in goodness, truth, and beauty through the Holy Scriptures and the liberal arts.

Challenge the Mind

We cultivate our student’s minds to think well.  Time-tested methods of a classical education “go with the grain” of a child’s developmental stage. Children progress through the three stages of the trivium – grammar, logic, and rhetoric – to become thoughtful and capable individuals who are prepared to take on the challenges of their world.

At Hunter, we foster a love of learning and nurture the child’s sense of wonder as we partner with parents to prepare students to be lifelong learners. Our approach to education allows students to use all skills across all subjects, and our small class size allows each student to be known and nurtured by our teachers. Our teaching methods are geared to serve motivated students of on-grade level to above-grade-level academic proficiencies. At Hunter, we develop a strong foundation and challenge students to do their best work. We offer an academically rigorous and college preparatory program for all of our students.

Nourish the Spirit

We train our students to rightly order their affections to pursue goodness, beauty, and truth whether they are in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in their community.  Our understanding of God as our creator and redemption through Jesus Christ serves as a foundation for all of our teaching and conduct.

Our students are known and loved at school by caring teachers and administrators who are intentional in modeling and pointing students to the person and works of Christ.  Our school has deep Anglican roots and we are supported by the Anglican School Association. At the same time, we warmly embrace students from all Christian traditions and backgrounds. We partner with parents, and faith communities to promote the moral development of each child to the end of abundant living.  A short list of the Judeo-Christian values that our school community emphasizes includes: respect, integrity, a strong work ethic, responsibility, and discipline.

Develop the Whole Child

At Hunter, we are committed to the great work of shaping the heart, soul, and mind of young people to live purposeful and abundant lives.  We develop discernment in each child to equip them to be wise decision-makers who contribute to their communities with joy and satisfaction. At Hunter, students are taught to make connections across subjects and to learn to use all of their skills in every class and in the world.  The result is a well-educated student who can see the rich interconnections across subject matter, all the while connecting it back to God’s hand in all creation.

Faculty

The role of teachers in classical Christian education is unique. Teaching is first and foremost a spiritual gift and missionary calling. Hunter seeks teachers who are servants of Christ, passionate about weaving connections of God’s hand into all subject matter and into their daily interactions with students. Teachers at Hunter are servant leaders; their relentless pursuit of learning and love of their subject matter inspires students to become passionate learners themselves and to seek knowledge for the fulfillment it brings and not for the grades it produces. Our teachers have gained their scholarship not only through formal education or subject matter degrees but also informally through independent life experiences and study. Hunter teachers are nurturers, life mentors, and partners with parents in the formation of our students.

Our Story

Hunter Classical Christian School was founded in 2010 under the vision and leadership of Dr. Ann McLean. Hunter was named for her father, Dr. James G. Hunter, whose character and life are an inspiration. Hunter opened its doors in 2012 to 26 students on the beautiful grounds of Dover Baptist Church in Manakin Sabot, Virginia. Through the intervening years, Hunter has faithfully served students and families and outgrew its home in its 9th year.

Hunter moved nine miles east of its original campus to Derbyshire Baptist Church in Henrico County in the summer of 2021. The opening of the Logic School, named for the second stage of the Trivium, which serves students in the 6th through 8th grades, coincided with the move to Derbyshire Baptist Church. We welcomed Mr. Jeff Brown as headmaster this same summer.

In the 2022-23 school year, our school enrollment doubled from 56 students before our move from Manakin Sabot to 115 students in our second year located at Derbyshire. In the 2023-24 school year, Hunter expanded to a second campus location at Parham Road Baptist Church to house the growing Logic School.

The Board of Directors approved a K-12 vision for the school, codified our affiliation with the Anglican School Association, began our journey toward accreditation through the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), and amended the strategic plan to include provisions for a Rhetoric School (high school).

We expectantly look to the next chapter of our story and anticipate what the Lord will do through the lives of our students and families in the years to come. We invite you to be a part of this story as we build our future!
